Dad Goes ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ on Daughter’s Hair as Punishment for Getting Highlights

When Ohio mom, Christin Johnson, brought her 12-year-old daughter, Kelsey, home with “blonde highlights” last year, her ex-husband (allegedly) LOST HIS SHIT and cut off all of her hair.

“This is what my daughter looked like Sunday when I took her home,” Johnson wrote in a public post on Facebook, “and the other two pics is what happened today before she was brought to me… all over me having highlights put in her hair for her birthday!”

According to WTOL-11, Kelsey’s father, Schaffen Frederick, and step-mother, Sarah Murray, were placed on administrative leave from The Middleton Township Fire Department after officials learned the couple was being investigated by the Haskins Police Department and Wood County Children’s Services.

The post that led to the investigation, which has now been shared over 25k times, claims that Frederick and Murray cut the girl’s hair off as punishment for putting in highlights—a gift from Johnson to celebrate her daughter’s 13th birthday.

“I’m a father of a teenager girl and I too don’t like her to highlight or color her hair but this here is absolutely disgusting,” wrote one commenter.

Another said, “Thank you for posting this. It really puts my feelings towards my daughter’s choice in hairstyle into perspective.”

A few weeks after Johnson’s post went viral, she shared another, much happier, update.

“I’d like to thank the ladies at Lady Jane’s on Glendale in Toledo, OH for making my baby feel more like herself,” she wrote on Facebook. “She got her smile back because of you ladies and your selfless acts of kindness! We truly appreciate you ladies so much!”

Still, despite her newfound confidence and glowing smile in the photos (after being humiliated in public by her father), Kelsey still has a long road ahead.

“We had many offering to gift Kelsey extensions, hair appointments, wigs, and legal fees,” wrote Kelsey’s aunt, Kelly Johnson, on a GoFundMe set up in her honor.

“Although things are the same, a few things have changed. Kelsey was removed from her father’s home and is surrounded by her mom, gramma, aunt, siblings also cousins and friends.”

But a bad haircut is just the beginning. Men like Kelsey’s father are changing rules and challenging women’s rights all across America and, if we don’t stand together and do something soon, things are going to get a whole lot worse for us girls.

Beware the Handmaid’s Tale, people. This is more than just a TV show; it’s life for women in 2019, and it’s scary AF.
