While inauguration day was a beautiful, moving event after the last 4 years of… whatever the fuck that was, people are not one-dimensional and neither are their emotions. Case in point? On a day when we felt relief, hope, and profound awe in the face of new possibilities, we also came out full-swing with the memes and the jokes.

Of all the inauguration memes, the absolute BEST would have to be the Bernie memes. Bernie Sanders came to the inauguration in casual frump chic, and the internet was totally HERE FOR IT. Sanders, who is no stranger to becoming meme fodder, delighted the world with his mask, oversized coat, and woolen mittens.

Fun fact! There’s a backstory to the mittens and it’s almost as adorable as the Bern looks when he sports them. Apparently, those mittens were from a woman who’s since shared her genuine surprise that they made it so far on the public stage. Gotta love a female-owned business getting the attention it deserves!

The memes about Bernie trended on Twitter with the #berniesmittens hashtag, and memes everywhere roasted the fact that poor Bernie looked cold, and ready to move onto the other shit on his to-do list for the day. At the end of a very long and terrible presidency, these memes were the perfect palate cleanser as the US moves on to (fingers crossed) better and brighter things.
