Sign Language to Get You Through a Global Pandemic

Whether you are for or against wearing a mask and socially distancing yourself from others to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, there is one thing we can all agree on: people are assholes, and everyone’s pissed. What if I told you there was a way to release all that pent up anger without saying a word?

It turns out that deaf people are way ahead of us when it comes to expressing emotion. While the rest of us rely on one finger to illustrate rage, those practicing American Sign Language (ASL) have been living large, cursing up a silent storm (without causing a scene) for decades. Lucky for us, seven of these hearing impaired men and women have agreed to share their expertise with YouTube channel Cut in the form of an instructional video.

Deaf People Teach Us Bad Words gives an inside peek into what the hearing culture has been missing all along, and it’s gratifying AF. If you’re looking for a chill way to lose your shit in public, get ready for the lesson of a lifetime.

From “eat a dick” to “you ugly motherfucker,” the language goals in this video are endless. Though some require manually spelling out a word using alphabet signs, most only involve one or two gestures. Below are some of our favs.

While this well crafted (and much needed) tutorial may give those of you stuck at home a productive way to kill time during the lockdown, it goes without saying that you should always choose your words wisely—even if they aren’t verbal—because you never know who may be listening.
