Best and Worst States to Give Birth: Where Does Your State Rank?

These are the best and worst states to give birth. Surprised or in agreement with the results?

Most women who give birth to multiple children do so at the same hospital each time. Unless they move, have a bad experience, or must give birth at a specialized hospital due to medical complications, they pretty much stick with what’s familiar.

I am not most women.

My first son was born in Florida. Shortly after his birth, we moved back to our home state of Michigan, which meant our second son was born there. But because he had a traumatic birth, after which we learned he had suffered a stroke sometime between 37 weeks gestation and his actual birth itself, I wasn’t about to go back to the same practice that I felt had not done their due diligence both during my pregnancy and delivery. So I found a new practice, which meant a new hospital for my third son.

I have been around the birth-giving block, so to speak, affording me a unique perspective. I’ve seen how things go down in multiple states and hospitals within states. Which is why seeing the best and worst states in which to give birth was quite interesting to me.

If we’re being honest, my experience in Florida was far better than either of my experiences in Michigan, though I realize much of this is due to a number of factors, from the care I received from my doctors and how comfortable I felt during my hospital stay to the unfortunate aftermath of my second son’s birth. Still, I found it interesting that Florida ranks below Michigan in the overall category, though admittedly not by much.
