’90s Kids Rejoice: Animaniacs Is Making A Comeback

Hellooooo, nurse! The horniest cartoon characters in TV history will soon be back on the small screen.

Like pretty much every other show that had its hayday in the ’90s,  Animaniacs is primed for a comeback, thanks to Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin Entertainment. Older millennials will probably remember loving the show and wondering why so many grown-ups did, too.

Looking back, I now realize that a lot of those Animaniacs jokes were going way over my head.

Yakko, Wakko, and Dot were pretty damn pervy for a bunch of cartoon animal/creature things (what the hell are they, anyway?). The siblings constantly ogled women, spewed sexual innuendo, and reveled in double entendres that were way too advanced for their target audience. Of course, that’s probably what made the show so awesome.

I could be dead wrong about this, but I don’t think many kids’ cartoons today could get away with any of the stuff that was happening on Animaniacs. I’m pretty sure Peppa Pig, as annoying as she is, would never make an allusion to fingering or ask to watch “the adult channel.” (Spongebob, though, is a different story…)

I don’t know that I’ll be letting my children watch the new and perhaps improved Animaniacs, but as a child of the ’80s and ’90s I can definitely see firing it up for my own entertainment. I guess I’ll have to start thinking up excuses as to why this cartoon’s not for kids.

If you need a refresher on the risqué yet totally hilarious humor of the Animaniacs, all 98 of the original episodes are on Netflix.

Just wait ’til the kids are in bed.
