14 Things Dads Say and What They Really Mean

Moms get a lot of attention. But dads are also integral figures in a child's development. Here are 14 cute, funny, and poignant things dads say and what they really mean.

Moms get a lot of attention, but let’s not forget who else plays an integral part in our kids’ lives: their dads. Whether they’re doling out advice or offering funny quips, dads are central to shaping children and remain a solid part of their memories once they’ve flown the coop, so to speak. Their words are certainly worth remembering.

With a little help from my husband, I came up with a list of things dads say…and what they really mean.

1. What dads say: “Let’s not bother putting on pants.” What they really mean: We aren’t going anywhere today.

2. What dads say: “Who wants Mac ‘n Cheese?” What they really mean: That is quick and easy!

3. What dads say: “Batman can’t fight crime with a dirty mouth.” What they really mean: Open your freaking mouth so I can brush your teeth.

4. What dads say: “If you want to grow big and strong like the Hulk, you’ve got to eat your broccoli.” What they really mean: I wonder if I can get him to eat mine too.

5. What dads say: “We are only going to play video games for a little while.” What they really mean: We will play until Mama makes us turn them off.

6. What dads say: “Who wants to watch cartoons?” What they really mean: Daddy is going to doze on the couch.

7. What dads say: “Okay, let’s clean up as fast as we can!” What they really mean: Mama is on her way home.

8. What dads say: “Let’s go play catch.” What they really mean: If you’re gonna go pro, we need to start practicing early.

9. What dads say: “You want me to put you down so we can race?” What they really mean: You’re getting heavy and I am tired of carrying you.

10. What dads say: “Ask your Mom.” What they really mean: I don’t want to make this decision.

11. What dads say: “Let’s do the dishes and get Mommy some flowers!” What they really mean: The kids are going to bed early tonight.

12. What dads say: “Are you having fun, Buddy?” What they really mean: I love spending time with you; being your dad is awesome.

13. What dads say: “Should we take a picture?” What they really mean: I’m really going to miss this someday.

14. What dads say: “Let’s go visit Grandpa.” What they really mean: I owe my dad a thank you.
