It’s National Kids and Pets Day! Did you get all your shopping done?! Just kidding, it’s not a present-giving holiday… not yet, anyway (but wait ’til Hallmark gets their hands on it).
So yeah, National Kids and Pets Day is a thing now, and apparently it has been since 2005. Don’t get me wrong, I love adorable babies and cute puppies and kitties as much as anyone, but I’m not sure the most pampered creatures in our lives need a whole day set aside to celebrate their awesomeness.
If you have kids and/or pets, doesn’t your entire life revolve around them already? Literally every day is Kids and Pets Day.

I think we’re getting a wee bit carried away with national days. For example, do we really need:
1. World Emoji Day (July 17) – I speak emoji as fluently as any 11-year-old girl and I’m still not going to spend a day celebrating them.
2. Penguin Awareness Day (January 20) – Not Save the Penguins Day, mind you… just be aware of them. Like, brake at penguin crossings, I guess?
3. Public Sleeping Day (February 28) – Is it me or does this sound vaguely dangerous?
4. Middle Name Pride Day (March 10) – Mine’s Yolanda, so I’m gonna sit this one out.
5. CAPS LOCK DAY (October 22) – WHY WOULD I WANT TO SPEND AN ENTIRE DAY HAVING EVERYONE THINK I WAS REALLY ANGRY?!
I’d love to know what the process is like for creating a national day of something or other. Do I have to start a petition? Is there an application? Is there a governing body that okayed Draw A Bird Day (April 8)?
If so, I’d like to submit some ideas.
- Leave Me Alone Day
- Stay In Bed Day
- Let Someone Else Adult Day
- Watch Everything on Your DVR Day
- Put Down Your Damn Phone For 5 Minutes Day
Not all national days are totally ridiculous, though — or at least, some of them come with fun freebies.
It also happens to be National Pretzel Day, so be sure to snag a treat on the house at places like Auntie Anne’s.
