Not all heroes wear capes. As it turns out, some of them wear ranger hats.
Last week, Lord Voldemort Trump was sworn in as President. (For those who missed it: Trump gave a nationalistic speech, Melania looked like a war prisoner, and Kellyanne Conway came dressed as Paddington Bear Barbie.) Soon after, an employee at the U.S. National Park Services retweeted a tweet comparing the crowd at Trump’s inaugural ceremony to the one from President Obama’s, at which point their official Twitter account was temporarily suspended.
The rogue tweeting began when Badlands National Park in South Dakota, as the park’s verified Twitter account, defiantly tweeted facts about climate change, such as: “Today, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is higher than at any time in the last 650,000 years. #climate.”
The tweets through the verified account were later deleted, but the #resist movement, in the name of science, was in full swing and the @AltUSNatParkService account was born.
According to NPR, in the following days came new orders from the Trump administration “to limit outward contact with the public, including bans on social media postings, at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Interior Department, which oversees the National Park Service.”
And in response, many more “alt” or “rogue” government Twitter accounts sprang up, including @altUSEPA, @Alt_CDC, @RogueNASA, @NotAltWorld (Originally@AltNatParkSer),
and @Alt_USED. And here are some of their best tweets this week:

As hard as this is for some people to hear, we have to put planet before country. We don’t get to file bankruptcy when we destroy Earth.

Remember, folks: #facts don’t go away, no matter how many web pages and tweets they delete.

Remember when US wasn’t in chaos, science wasn’t outlawed, Mexico wasn’t an enemy & Putin wasn’t an ally? When was that? Oh yeah, last week.

These accounts, though unverified, deserve our attention and support. In a world where the U.S. President tweets blatant “alternative facts” to the public, real data and science matter now more than ever.
