Writer Pens Epic Obituary for The Walking Dead Character, Brings Closure to Fans

Note: The following post most definitely contains season 7 spoilers.

In what will definitely go down as one of the most epic responses to The Walking Dead season 7 premiere, Andrea Bruner, a columnist for The Batesville Daily Guard in Batesville, Arkansas, asked her friend, Frank Vaughn, to pen an obituary for the much-beloved Glenn Rhee, who died at the hands of the show’s newest villain, Negan, in the season’s premiere episode. Appearing in the newspaper’s opinion section just two days after the character’s brutal murder, Bruner’s introduction and Vaughn’s obituary are garnering a lot of attention from bereaved fans and non-watchers alike.

In her opinion piece, which The Batesville Daily Guard tweeted today, Bruner admits that she is “too depressed…after Sunday night’s brutal death of one of [her] favorite TV characters,” stating Glenn Rhee’s death “hit [her] harder than Han Solo from ‘The Force Awakens.'” In lieu of her traditional column piece, Bruner featured Vaughn’s obituary for Glenn, which reads, in part:

A faithful friend, Glenn spared no personal risk or inconvenience to care for and provide for his adopted Apocalyptic family of survivors. His bravery in the face of both the Undead and the Brutal Living inspired all who knew him.

The obituary, a picture of which has 20 thousand comments and has been liked 51 thousand times and shared 156 thousand times from Amiri King’s Facebook page, reads exactly as an obituary should, featuring details about Glenn’s childhood and parents and listing the cast of characters who survive him. It is a sheer work of brilliance, to be sure.

Indeed, Glenn was a force to be reckoned with since season 1 of the series and certainly a favorite among avid fans. Whether it was because of his integral role in saving Rick on the streets of Atlanta as well as other fellow survivors countless times or his devotion to Maggie since he first stepped foot on Herschel’s farm, Glenn won our hearts a thousand times over.

As a fan of the series myself, I was GUTTED following the season 7 premiere episode. When Glenn met his untimely death at the wrong end of Negan’s Lucille, I swear his life flashed before my eyes. It was as though I had just lost a close friend or family member, a seemingly silly yet undeniably real phenomenon for many whose hopes for a pleasant night of sleep were dashed Sunday.

Echoing the desires of devout fans the world over, Vaughn’s obituary ends in the only way something so monumental should:

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations of LITERALLY ANYONE WHO CAN HELP THEM DEFEAT NEGAN be made in his memory.

From your word processor to God’s ears (or rather, the show’s writers’ ears), Vaughn.

On behalf of all TWD fans everywhere, I thank you, Bruner and Vaughn, for bringing us much-needed closure in our time of distress.
