Why Parents Are Putting Their Babies In Cardboard Boxes

Parents are putting their babies in cardboard boxes

Nobody puts baby in a corner, but Finland has been putting newborn babies in boxes since 1938, and now the US is following suit.

Putting your baby in a cardboard box might sound strange, but these box programs aim to lower the infant mortality rate by providing parents of newborns a safe sleeping environment and vital baby essentials like diapers, bath products, clothes, and more.

Another cool thing about these boxes is that they’re lined with a small mattress so that baby can sleep inside the box.

Currently, Finland holds the lowest infant mortality rate, and the baby boxes their government has been handing out since the 1930s have contributed to that largely. The world has taken notice, and now the US has joined in on this amazing trend by offering boxes to parents.

The company responsible for baby boxes here in the US is called The Baby Box Co. and is based out of Los Angeles, thanks to co-founders and best friends since childhood, Jennifer Clary and Michelle Vick. They will provide parents with boxes that will include breast pads, breast cream, diapers, wipes, a onesie, mattress, waterproof cover, and fitted sheet.

To be eligible for these boxes, parents must register at babyboxuniversity.com and prove that they are residents, watch a program on safe sleeping habits, and pass a quiz to earn a certificate of completion. Then, they can either pick up their box at the closest distributor or have the box shipped to their home.

In the US, roughly 3,500 infants die due to sleep-related issues such as SIDs and even strangulation. Many parents put their babies to sleep in unsafe sleep environments for lack of better knowledge. By teaming up with experts, The Baby Box Co. will hopefully put a dent in those 3,500 deaths.
