You’ve survived the decorating, the planning, the present-buying, the cooking, the family gatherings, the never-ending messes, and the utter exhaustion of the holidays. There’s only one more thing to make it through: the new year.

New Year’s Eve always has this air of expectation surrounding it. You’ve got to plan for or attend the best party, make the best resolutions, vow to be your best self, and somehow will your children into the best versions of the tiny heathens they actually are. Unfortunately, none of that is possible.

I’ve had exactly two memorable New Year’s Eves, and they happened by accident. The more you build up the new year, the more it is destined to be a disaster. You can’t plan for this amazing transition into a new era. It’s not like when the clock strikes midnight, suddenly all your baggage will disappear. Everything is exactly the same on January 1 as it is on December 31. The only difference is the calendar has changed and you will be writing the wrong year on anything with a date until you finally get used to the right one, only to have it change on you once again.

The new year certainly brings with it the promise of brighter things. But the pressure to make those things happen? GTFO with that nonsense. It’s great to think positively, and Lord knows I’m doing the same. But to break your sanity over making sure everything’s perfect for the next 12 months? Forget about it.
