Southwest Flight Turns on Pink Lights in Support of Women’s March

A Southwest flight bound for Washington, D.C. Thursday turned on its pink cabin lights in an apparent show of support for passengers headed to the Women’s March this weekend.

Two passengers shared photos of the flight on their social media accounts:

“When your Southwest flight crew celebrate a plane full of kickass women and men going to the Women’s March by lighting it up #lit #womensmarchonwashington #lovetrumpshate,” Instagram user @kpmagnolia captioned her photo of the lights:

A Southwest representative responded in an emailed statement provided to The Huffington Post:

While we’re unaware of details surrounding a specific flight, our flight crews celebrate, commemorate, acknowledge and share in special moments with our customers all the time.

Some of our aircraft are equipped with mood lighting and while this was not a companywide initiative, at times, our flight crews will adjust the lighting for a customer or group of customers traveling on their flight. For example, in October, one of our flight crews changed the lighting to honor a breast cancer survivor onboard their flight.

According to The New York Times, law enforcement in Washington, D.C. is planning for a crowd that could swell to 400,000 this weekend. The Women’s March is scheduled for Saturday, January 21st, Trump’s first full day in office.

The movement is not limited to D.C. either. The Women’s March has gone global, with over 600 “sister marches” planned in 57 countries that same day, as an international display of opposition to Trump’s presidency. A map on the Women’s March Global site shows the hundreds of events worldwide:

“Nationalist, racist and misogynistic trends are growing worldwide and threaten the most marginalized groups in our societies including women, people of color, immigrants, Muslims, the LGBTQIA community, and people with disabilities,” states the Facebook page for the march in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Facebook page for organizers in Berlin, Germany declared: “This march is the first step towards unifying our communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up. We will not rest until women have parity and equity at all levels of leadership in society. We work peacefully while recognizing there is no true peace without justice and equity for all.”
