Seth Meyers Makes Us Laugh / Cry as He Shares the Story of His Son’s Birth

In his typical hilarious, yet heart-felt way, Seth Meyers tells the harrowing tale of how his new son came into the world—in their apartment lobby.

If you’ve been a Seth Meyers fan since Weekend Update like I have, you know and appreciate his uncanny ability to deliver the news—the good and the bad—with a delicate balance of humor and humility. I remember the day after this last presidential election, when so many of us were in Stage 1 of grief (a.k.a. shock and horror) and Meyers took the stage on Late Night. You could see the despair in his eyes, and he didn’t hide his disappointment. But he still found a way to soothe the country’s pain with some humor and punching political commentary.

Well, like all good comedians, Meyers carries this sarcastic, yet often heartfelt sense of humor into his personal life as well. He told his audience last night of his most recent family news—the birth of his son, Axel, who made a memorable entrance into this world.

With that ear-to-ear grin reserved for dads who’ve just helped bring a child into the world, Meyers says that despite having the best laid plans, baby Axel thought a hospital birth was far too boring. (I mean, he is son to one of the most talented SNL writers in history, after all.)

Meyers tells the audience that even though their first son, Ashe, was born extremely quickly and Meyers and wife Alexi almost didn’t make it to the hospital, the couple still thought they were on track for a normal delivery this time. Wrong. “Move over, that story,” Meyers says in his opening monologue. “Because that’s so normal compared to what happened yesterday.”

The story goes that his wife started having contractions (which were still about 20 minutes apart), so the soon-to-be parents of two started preparing. They called their midwife, set up childcare for big brother Ashe, and were making their way down the list and toward the hospital.

Suddenly Alexi tried telling husband Seth and their midwife that the baby was coming, but no one really understood the severity of the situation. That is until she said, “The baby is out.” And, in his always hysterical fashion, her doting husband described to all of America that “she looked like someone who was hiding a baby in a pair of sweatpants.”

Once they realized the baby was out, the asked themselves if they should stay in the lobby or go back upstairs, which, Meyers reminds us, “are both terrible options when what you’re looking for is a hospital.”

Of course Dad called 911 in the midst of all of this panic and says that baby Axel’s birth was so fast, his phone call sounded a lot like this: “‘We’re about to have a baby — we’re having a baby — we had a baby.”

Thankfully Mom and baby are both perfectly healthy, and Meyers went on to thank the many people who helped ensure just that, including the NYPD and fire department, their doorman, the EMTs, their family, the doctors, and even the Uber driver they had called to take them to the hospital (but obviously ended up not needing) who charged him anyway! “We did you a HUGE favor,” Meyers jokes.

But, as is his signature move, Meyers gets emotional at the end, in realizing how amazingly miraculous it is that he has created life. His wife’s grandparents were Holocaust survivors, and with a cracked voice, he shares that he and Alexi gave Axel a middle name in their honor, since their fight to live meant his son is here today. He also thanks his wife for her bravery and says that when he saw her lay their son her chest, he knew that “he’s going to be fine because of her.”

Aaaand to bring it back to funny, cue the joke: “I’m getting choked up thinking about how brave I was.” There’s the Seth Meyers we all know and love.

Welcome to the world, little Axel. You’re probably going to have a great sense of humor, and now you have a fab birth story to tell the playground kids. Live it up, little man!

Congrats to the Meyers!
