New Attachment Parenting Trend: Stay Literally Attached To Your Child 24/7

By Joanna McClanahan of Ramblin’ Mama

A new trend seems to be growing in popularity, particularly in the Pacific Northwest and in predominately affluent neighborhoods: Literal attachment parenting.

You may have heard of attachment parenting before, which typically includes things like co-sleeping and baby-wearing. But this new trend takes attachment parenting the next level, insisting that parents have some skin-to-skin contact with their children at all hours of the day and night.

“When I had Stella, my world changed completely,” said Hailey, a stay-home mom who lives just outside Seattle. “I didn’t want to be away from her for a single moment. Now I know I wasn’t being codependent, I was just following my attachment instincts,” said Hailey, as she kissed her child’s head.

Stella, who is apparently 53-months-old, didn’t say anything but didn’t look thrilled about being attached at her mother’s hip. Wrapped hip-cross-carry style, to be specific.

“An increasing number of mothers are taking a more direct style of parenting that involves promoting that parent-child bond at all hours of the day,” said Becky Wadsworth, a local life coach and supposed parenting expert. “Moms should be home with their kids, developing that bond. Not off at work; that’s what husbands are for.”

But not all parents can afford the luxury of choosing to be attachment parents.

“I guess I never knew how expensive this attachment stuff would be,” said a local mom who chose to remain anonymous. “The carriers and wraps these moms are always pushing cost hundreds of dollars. Not to mention the impossibility of working, even from home, with my child touching me at all times. And you don’t even want to know how the bathroom part works.”

Another anonymous mom said, “Hard pass. I work outside the home to escape my kids for a reason.”
