Mom Blasted for Wearing Casual Attire to Back-to-School Night

By Marlene Kern Fischer of Thoughts From Aisle Four

A local woman was heavily criticized for wearing unstylish clothing to back-to-school night at her daughter’s high school a few days ago.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, said she realized she was garnering stares as she walked from class to class but was unsure why. A close friend of hers pulled her aside after fourth period and explained that she should have given more thought to her appearance for the social outing.

The woman said she had been so busy feeding her children dinner and trying to clean up the kitchen that she had forgotten to even change into a clean shirt before rushing to the school. She said she had felt pleased she had remembered to brush her teeth.

After her friend spoke to her, she looked around and saw that most of the other women were dressed as if they were attending a fashion week runway show. Many women wore skinny jeans and peasant blouses and teetered in the hallways on their high-heel, wedge strappy sandals. Unfortunately, as they ran class to class, a few toppled over but were quite graceful as they fell.

She also noted the majority of women seemed to have had their hair blown out, fresh manicures and professionally applied makeup.

Feeling a little ashamed, the woman tried to cover the macaroni and cheese stain on her t-shirt. Another mother in attendance said that the ill-dressed woman was “setting a bad example which might affect the district’s state ranking.”

Already somewhat of a social pariah, the woman felt terrible that she had once again made such a faux pas and resolved to do better at her son’s back to school night at the middle school the following week. She planned a trip to the mall for a new outfit and handbag and was blocking out the entire afternoon to get ready.

Further details will be reported as they occur.
