Forget Yanny and Laurel. There’s a New Recording: Brainstorm or Green Needle?

Yanny and Laurel are SO HOT right now, and I don’t mean to come between the 3 of you, but there’s a new recording on the scene, and it’s quite possibly even more mind-bending than the other two. It’s Brainstorm and Green Needle, and unlike with Yanny and Laurel, you as a listener can actually control which one you hear WITH YOUR MIND.

That’s right. Mind powers.

The recording, which was first posted on YouTube as part of a toy review by user DosmRider, is slightly different than Yanny and Laurel (it’s Laurel, btw) because listeners typically hear either “brainstorm” or “green needle” depending on what they’re thinking about most at the time, and the one they hear CHANGES as they focus more on one versus the other.

Want to see what your first inclination is? Give it a listen below.

So, what did you hear?

My first time, I heard “brainstorm.” I heard it the second time, too. And the third, and the fourth, and the … well, you get the picture. But then when I took the screen away from my face, held it up to my ear, and thought real hard about “green needle,” voila! I heard “green needle”!

And I was like, “Yay! This is so fun! OMG, I can hear them bo–wait a minute. Is this some kind of trick? Does it purposely say one and then switch to the other and back to the first again in order to manipulate us into thinking we’re doing it with our minds? I’m not buying it.”

So I tried again. And again. And each time, I concentrated really hard on one or the other, taking care not to switch between them according to any sort of pattern, and I COULD STILL CONTROL WHAT I HEARD. WITH MY MIND.

Naturally, I had to see if anyone else could do the same. So I rounded up my kids and made them give a listen. My 9-year-old must have inherited my brain because he heard “brainstorm” first as well. But then, when he concentrated, he was able to hear “green needle,” and then “brainstorm,” and then “green needle” again, all according to which one he thought about most at the time.

My 3-year-old claims to have experienced the same. He just wants to be like us.

But my 7-year-old only heard one thing, and that was … “brain needle.” BRAIN NEEDLE, YOU GUYS. A combo of both. To me, that’s the most fascinating part, although I do feel bad that he has to miss out on the whole mind powers thing, tbh.

So give it a try again below. Can you hear whichever one you want according to the one you’re focusing on most?

Mind powers, everybody. MIND. POWERS.
