A ‘Mean Girls’ Musical Is Coming This Fall So Everything Is Going to Be Fine

By Joanna McClanahan of Ramblin’ Mama

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by 2016.

It was definitely the Regina George of years. It was a life ruiner. Last year ruined people’s lives.

Well, luckily, 2017 is off to a pretty good start now that the ‘Mean Girls’ musical is scheduled to premiere at the National Theater in Washington D.C. on October 31st.

The musical’s creative team is led by writer/humorist/actress Tina Fey, who wrote the film’s screenplay. The music will be written by composer Jeff Richmond (Fey’s husband) and lyricist Nell Benjamin, who worked on the stage adaptation of ‘Legally Blonde.’ Casey Nicholaw (‘The Book of Mormon’) is set to direct the musical.

It all sounds pretty grool to us. And, according to the New York Times, Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels, who produced the movie, will do the same for the show alongside veteran Broadway producer Stuart Thompson. (Although there are no plans to move the show to Broadway at this time.)

Not much other information about the project is available just yet, but I like to hope the songs will be crafted from some of our favorite movie quotes. Here is what my dream list of musical numbers would look like:

  • “On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink”
  • “You Smell Like a Baby Prostitute”
  • “I’m Not a Regular Mom, I’m a Cool Mom”
  • “You Can’t Just Ask People Why They’re White” (a ballad)
  • “Is Butter a Carb?”
  • “Don’t Have Sex Because You Will Get Pregnant and Die”
  • “You Could Try Sears”
  • “Boo, You Whore”
  • “She Doesn’t Even Go Here!”
  • “Stop Trying to Make ‘Fetch’ Happen”
  • “Would You Like to Buy Some Drugs?”
  • “Whatever, I’m Getting Cheese Fries”

As far as the level of our excitement is concerned? THE LIMIT DOES NOT EXIST. We’ll let you know as soon as tickets are available and, don’t worry, you can totally sit with us.
