32 Years Later, Billie Jean Is Still the Hero We All Need

32 years ago today, The Legend of Billie Jean premiered, and teenage girls across the country found a new hero.

The movie’s premise was simple enough: underdog seeks justice. Or if you prefer the official movie tagline: “When you’re seventeen, people think they can do anything to you. Billie Jean is about to prove them wrong.”

If you haven’t seen the movie, here is the gist:

When her brother’s scooter was stolen and trashed by privileged dirtbag Hubie Pyatt, Billie Jean Davy approached Hubie’s father to pay for the repairs. Mr. Pyatt instead offered to let her earn the money by having sex with him, proving that the rotten apple doesn’t fall far from the pervert tree.

Then all hell broke loose when Billie Jean’s admittedly dim-witted brother (played by a young Christian Slater), accidentally shot Mr. Pyatt in the shoulder. Billie Jean and her brother skipped town in a panic, and soon they were all over the news.

Billie Jean became a media sensation and cult hero after news stations aired a video of her with a newly cropped pixie cut, proclaiming, “Fair is fair!” (Really, this movie is about the power of an awesome haircut as much as anything else.)

Here is the trailer in all its 1980s glory:

Okay, I will admit that The Legend of Billie Jean is pretty damn cheesy. (It was 1985! Cheesy was practically a requirement!)

Still, it’s a cult classic because we all feel like Billie Jean at some point in our lives. Who hasn’t felt powerless against somebody with more money or more influence? Who hasn’t been propositioned by some skeevy older man who thinks he can get away with anything? Who hasn’t felt the power of an amazing haircut? (Is that last one just me? Sorry. I’m growing out my pixie cut right now and it’s a tragedy of awkwardness.)

The cherry on top of the (admittedly cheesy) Billie Jean sundae is the theme song: Invincible by Pat Benatar. I dare you to not rock out when you hear that song. (If you’re watching GLOW on Netflix, you’ll hear it there too.)

Invincible is pretty much the soundtrack to any good resistance:

We can’t afford to be innocent
Stand up and face the enemy
It’s a do or die situation
We will be invincible

Now let’s all chop off our hair and start kicking some ass. Fair is fair.
