When I was a kid, I used to think my parents purposely set out to ruin my life. From their demands that I do such awful things as clean my room to their insistence that I take a bath and dress as though I weren’t raised in a barn to go places, there was no doubt in my mind that their primary mission was to make me miserable.

And now that I’m a parent, I can confidently say I was right.

Just kidding. Now that I’m a parent, I can confidently say my parents got the short end of that stick.

The amount of regret I have for giving them a hard time about the simplest and most mundane requests is astronomical. I mean, of course they wanted my brother and me to take a bath. They were the ones who had to smell us. And don’t even get me started on the cleaning part. I apologize a million times for forcing my parents to live in a pigsty similar to that which I’m now dealing with from my own children.

Suffice it to say, parents have a tough job, especially when it comes to dealing with their kids’ constant whining and complaining.
