Thank You, Meryl Streep, for Having the Courage to Stand Up for What’s Right

I didn’t watch the Golden Globes. I feel like I need to make that confession before moving forward.

I didn’t watch the Golden Globes. But I DID watch Meryl Streep’s address to her peers and the public at the Golden Globes, and I cannot move forward with my life without sending out the appropriate props to this talented, esteemed woman.

In a time when the world seems senseless to me — when my disabled son, my friends who don’t fit the “traditional mold,” my students who come to school unsure of themselves, and my fellow citizens who themselves have faced a lifetime of discrimination and whose ancestors have faced generations of it — embark upon a future with a President who finds no qualms with mocking and bullying those who disagree with or oppose him, it is more than refreshing to see someone in the public eye — someone certainly at risk of personal attack and criticism — stand up for that which is right.

Meryl Streep used her voice and her spotlight during her Golden Globes speech to highlight the crimes against humanity our President-Elect is responsible for, specifically his attack on a disabled reporter who dared to cross Trump, and she did it with compassion and and poise — and without apology.

She spoke truth. She spoke wisdom. And she spoke love.

May we all have the courage Meryl Streep had to stand up for that which we believe in, that which is right, and that which promotes acceptance and understanding and civilized discourse, as opposed to that which incites hatred, divisiveness, violence, and marginalization.

Brava, Ms. Streep. Tonight, you are my hero.
