Mom Cashes in on Decades-Old Mother’s Day ‘Coupons’

By Ali Hanford

Janice Hofstadter, 57, hit the jackpot this Mother’s Day weekend. She was cleaning the house in preparation of the brunch she was hosting and found a stack of old, handmade Mother’s Day coupons at the bottom of a drawer.

“At first, it just made me nostalgic for when the kids were little,” she said. “Then I realized that they didn’t have any expiration dates on them and it really would be nice to have my car washed by hand.”

When her son Michael, 25, and daughter Ellen, 27, arrived on Sunday, they had their work cut out for them.

“I thought we were going to have a family brunch, but instead we were put to work,” said Michael.

Rather than dine together as a family, Ellen was ordered to go prepare her mother breakfast in bed while Michael was told to go clean the bathroom. According to their father, John, it was one of the better Mother’s Day weekends they’ve had.

“Those kids did the laundry, scrubbed the bathroom and kitchen floors, made breakfast, and washed the car. I’m going to have to check all of my old drawers to see if we can make Father’s Day just as much fun,” he said.

“I really did feel bad about using the coupons at first,” admitted Janice. “But then I realized that I was about to host my own Mother’s Day brunch and I got over it.”

Ellen said she didn’t mind at all. “I’m glad Mom got to enjoy her day. I’m suddenly looking forward to getting those dumb coupons from my kids,” she explained. “I just hope they’re not smart enough to put expiration dates on them either.”
